Financial Accountant Job Profile

Context: 

The Finance Team is responsible for the accounting of all income and expenditure related to the running of the charity, including managing the money that we hold on behalf of clients. 

Purpose: 

The finance department is going through an exciting period of transformation. This role sits within the Finance department, as we automate processes, implement and maximise new tech systems and develop better data and reporting capabilities. 

This role is responsible for preparation, development and analysis of financial accounting information, financial statements, regulatory reporting and financial controls.

Reports to: Head of Finance 

Direct Reports: 3 x Finance Assistants 

Role: 

Key accountabilities: 

Year-End Accounts & Statutory Audit

  • Lead annual financial accounts and CASS audits
  • Prepare annual financial statements
  • Liaise with auditors and ensure reporting compliance

Financial Processes & Controls

  • Review, document, and enhance financial processes to evidence robust controls and risk mitigation
  • Ensure statutory returns are completed on time (HMRC, ONS surveys, grant claims)
  • Maintain charity bank accounts and signatory protocols

Monthly Accounts & Management Information

  • Take ownership of restricted funds management and development

Team Leadership

  • Create a culture of personal development
  • Lead with vulnerability and build a high-trust team
  • Balance team workloads using LEAN and effective strategic methods

Data & Systems Development

  • Lead development and integrity of the Financial System
  • Oversee design and implementation of new financial reports and process automation
  • Provide technical support on Chart of Accounts and reporting queries

Manager accountabilities 

Manager is proactive in creating a culture of personal development in the team, including but not limited to Personal Development Programmes (PDPs), Manager is a secure and honest leader, able to acknowledge mistakes, lead with vulnerability and build a high trust team 

Manager has excellent written and verbal communication skills and can tailor these to the audience and situation as needed 

Consistently and professionally articulates the needs of the team to wider stakeholders, whether as part of specific projects or business-as-usual tasks Manager is able to balance team workloads, boundaries and health using appropriate and effective strategic methods such as LEAN, problem definition and ideation tools 

Data & systems development 

Lead on the development of and integrity of the Financial System 

Oversee the design and implementation of new financial reports and automation of processes, leading to better financial information and data analytics for all stakeholders. 

Provide specialist and technical financial support to the Head of Finance and Management Accountant regarding Chart of accounts and Reporting queries 

Other miscellaneous 

Provide assistance, financial accounting advice and support to the management accountant in the preparation of budgets and review of monthly payroll data Act as senior point of contact for stakeholders outside the finance department, providing technical advice where required 

Attend ad hoc meetings as finance representative when required 

Measurable Outputs: 

Completion of accurate statutory audit and CASS working papers to timetable Income and Statutory Returns & other grant / statutory returns completed on time Implementation of all remaining Finance System modules and reporting and integrity of Chart of Accounts ensured 

Restricted expenditure management system created and reported regularly Capital expenditure management system created and reported monthly Identification of further improvements needed to financial processes and controls as appropriate 

Effective regular 1:1 meetings held 

Deliver Professional Development Plans for each member of the team, achieving 80% goals set

Other responsibilities include: 

Being willing to pray with staff and fully engaged with our Christ-centered culture. Encouraging friends, family and other contacts to support the charity through the Life Changer programme and other fundraising initiatives. 

Attending annual CAP staff conferences. 

Completing all compulsory CAP training within given timescales. 

This role falls within the scope of the FCA’s conduct rules, and you will be provided with training as to how these apply to the role. It is your responsibility to ensure that you follow these conduct rules.

Person: 

Education: 

Qualified or Part-Qualified Accountant (ACA,ACCA,CIMA or equivalent) Degree level education 

Experience: 

Essential 

  • Qualified or Part-Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Experience preparing statutory accounts
  • Excellent technical finance and accounting knowledge including leading audits
  • Problem-solving, analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail

Desirable 

  • Line-management experience
  • Charity accounting experience
  • Experience reviewing controls & processes and installing/upgrading accounting systems

Skills/Abilities: 

Excellent technical finance and accounting knowledge 

Excellent communicator and presentation skills, both verbally and in writing Ability to lead a team in actively promoting the cultural values of CAP Significant understanding of financial control and risk 

The ability to be decisive, proactive and use initiative 

Strong excel skills and use of data manipulation tools 

Ability to prioritise and manage own workloads, be organised, have a flexible working style and enjoy working to tight deadlines 

Possess a problem solving, analytical mindset with a high level of attention to detail Christian Commitment 

The candidate must be able to verbally assent to and practically demonstrate Christians Against Poverty’s Statement of Faith and Core Values. 

The candidate must be able to actively participate in prayer and worship, whether individual, small group or corporately, as an expression of their own personal faith and in line with CAP’s Statement of Faith.
