Job Title: Operations Manager (Large FMCG Warehouse)

Location: Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

Remuneration: c£50,000, Car Allowance, Bonus, Company Benefits

Their Story:

Our client is a multi award-winning exporter of British food, beverage and FMCG products and is currently enjoying some serious growth as an organisation due to the increased demand for British F&B items across the globe. 

The Operations Manager position is tasked as a business critical role in order that orders are streamlined through the re-processing facility before heading to all international markets. This role is heavy on people leadership as well as wider continuous improvement. 

Basics of the role:

  • Overseeing the day-to-day running of the warehouse – ensuring the site is run smoothly and effectively and reprocessing is carried out efficiently, in line with country and customer expectations
  • Leading and driving the team – ensuring appropriate resourcing models are in place - responsible for the management and development of individuals and for driving team motivation and morale
  • Establishing KPI’s and metrics to measure productivity – developing appropriate metrics and assessing progress against these to determine commercial performance and productivity levels; linking these to the customer journey to ensure customers’ expectations are met/exceeded
  • Process review – regularly reviewing process flow to ensure efficiencies are optimised at all times
  • Demand planning – providing clear and accurate pipeline forecasting; forward planning and preparing for future orders, having detailed sight of what is coming “down the line”; utilising and manipulating current data to ensure orders are planned and fulfilled within deadlines; “dashboard management”
  • Liaising with Head Office functions to ensure relevant information is clearly communicated so that deliveries are organised and prioritised effectively, and goods are dispatched within agreed timescales
  • Input to the Supply Chain and Logistics management aspects of the warehouse operation
  • P&L accountability – ownership for building/managing P&L costs (e.g. materials, resource, overheads)
  • Continuous improvement/Lean management – continually looking to adopt and implement these principles throughout the workplace
  • Quality assurance checking – ensuring relevant checking mechanisms are in place to reduce errors and minimise customer claims
  • Customer Service – accountability for delivering the highest standards of service at all times 
  • Identifying and sourcing best in class technology – understanding and putting into practice the benefits of technology in the workplace
  • Warehouse systems and Records management – ensuring appropriate systems are implemented and central records of information are kept
  • Ownership of Health & Safety – ensuring guidelines are adhered to and a safe environment is maintained

Skills/ Experience:

  • Commerciality - previous experience of managing warehouses and warehouse teams
  • Leadership – ability to drive, motivate and develop teams and have difficult conversations
  • Innovation – ability to find new, improved ways of doing things and have the vision and capability to implement change
  • Strong communication and influencing skills
  • Managing stakeholders/managing upwards – ability to manage internal customers across different functions and to attend Exec meetings and present recommendations and areas for improvement
  • Standards – ensuring high standards across the reprocessing warehouse at all times; use of 5S principles; organising warehouse into distinct areas (e.g. labelling office; logistics office etc.) to benefit the operation
  • “Build from scratch” – vision to be able to grow and scale up operation in line with commercial needs
  • Experience of implementing Warehouse systems
  • Exposure to Logistics and Supply Chain management
  • Resource Modelling and Budget setting experience
  • Quality checking and LEAN/Continuous improvement knowledge
  • Previous accountability for Health & Safety
  • Prior Export experience (desirable)
