About Eden Gate

Eden Gate Newport, South Wales, are working with the Newport City Council and other homeless services to address the needs of rough sleepers, supporting them on their journey from the streets to a place they can call home. The project will link with other outreach teams in the city to ensure people receive the right support, tailored to meet their needs. The project is community based and front facing working across the city meeting rough sleepers at their place of bedding down as well as providing a drop-in service at our premises on Hill Street.

Following the charities’ Christian ethos, the purpose of the Support Worker role is to provide a flexible person-centred service, with a view to rapidly addressing a person’s housing need and where possible, pointing service users towards other complementary interventions, treating every encounter as an opportunity. This will require positive risk-taking engagement following the Assertive Outreach Principles for Wales.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  1. To be a proactive and knowledgeable point of contact for our service users, ensuring that all are treated fairly and afforded equality of opportunity.
  1. To deliver person-centred, harm minimising support, establishing trust with rough sleepers, whilst acting as a role-model and talking to service users about their needs.
  1. To build and maintain effective relationships with other agencies, particularly drug & alcohol support services both locally and nationally, housing support via Newport Gateway and local churches to ensure service users have access to appropriate levels of support and care.
  1. To develop and implement effective and innovative ways of working with service users to help them participate in a range of socially inclusive activities and skill development opportunities.
  1. Engage with local churches, schools, community groups and forums to sensitively address negative stereotypes.
  1. Attend relevant forums and meetings such as Rough Sleepers’ Operational Group and Rough Sleepers’ Services Group.
  1. Maintaining accurate up to date records in line with local procedure and General Data Protection Regulations.

Person Specification


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • This post is covered by a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the post holder is a committed Christian
  • An unwavering commitment to see lives changed
  • Basic IT skills
  • An ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • A willingness to work with people who are homeless, rough sleeping or have complex needs
  • A proven ability to work in partnership with other organisations and agencies
  • An ability to respond flexibly to the demands of the post
  • Able to work and travel around the area as needed
  • A willingness and ability to work towards, and obtain, relevant qualifications and role related knowledge
  • Able to work unsocial hours (evenings, weekends and public holidays)


  • A practical knowledge of data collection, administration and recording procedures and able to maintain accurate records
  • An understanding of substance misuse issues their impact on people
  • A knowledge of Homelessness, Housing First and the Housing Wales Act 2014.
  • Management experience
  • Experience of leadership within a multi-agency context
  • Experience of promoting innovative concepts to funders and agencies
  • A proven ability to lead on community focussed projects with a challenging client base

Other Details

  1. Willing to attend regular supervision meetings with the Operations Manager to identify training and development requirements.
  2. To undertake any other tasks as reasonably requested by the Operations Manager which would further the work of Eden Gate.
  3. Full UK driving licence is essential.
  4. Although the role will generally involve working with other staff members and volunteers, some lone working may be required.
